The Monteverde Travelers’ PhilanthropyInitiative is a destination-wide Travelers’ Philanthropy initiative designed to equitably channel financial resources from the tourism sector to the local community and natural environment in Monteverde. The initiative is currently working with local businesses, community-leaders and development institutions to generate funding for locally identified environmental conservation and sustainable development projects. In doing so, the programme seeks to support more responsible and sustainable practices among visitors and local tourism enterprises.
The Weekly Farmer's Market
The Santa Elena Community Center/ Public High School Gymnasium is the first community development project identified by Travelers' Philanthropy-Monteverde. This multi-use community facility is centrally located in downtown Santa Elena (Monteverde) and represents one of the few available indoor spaces for youth sports programs, educational activities, civic forums and cultural and fundraising events, in addition to hosting the weekly farmers' market.
A significant resource for the greater Monteverde community, the community center/ high school gymnasium serves the general population of 6,500 residents throughout the year. This includes 400 local high school students each semester and 500-750 visitors and agricultural producers each week. Needed changes include a modified main entrance for improved accessibility, a redesign of bathroom and kitchen facilities for increased functionality, installation of materials to enhance acoustics, as well as structural reinforcement in order to meet modern safety standards.
The project was officially launched at the 3rd International Travelers' Philanthropy Conference with initial donations coming from conference participants. With the help of community development supporters like you, Travelers’ Philanthropy – Monteverde seeks to provide counterpart funding for three major improvements phases: 1-Conditioning; 2-Functionality, and 3-Safety.
In order to be able to fund these improvements, the ultimate goal for this project is to raise $55,000.
